POS Hardware – Overview of Receipt Printer

At this blog, we will briefly introduce overview of receipt printer. Receipt printer is an output device connected to computer that print information from the POS system. There are two type of connection either parallel or USB port. Generally for POS system they either use thermal receipt printer or dot matrix receipt printer.

Thermal Receipt Printer

A thermal printer (or direct thermal printer) produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermo chromic paper, or thermal paper as it is commonly known, when the paper passes over the thermal print head.

Thermal printers print faster than dot matrix printers. Even though the paper is more expensive, printers can be rapidly refilled, leading to almost zero downtime. It doesn't require a ribbon.

Dot Matrix Receipt Printer

s275 Dot matrix printer is a type of computer printer with a print head that runs back and forth, or in an up and down motion, on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like a typewriter.

Dot matrix printers can make carbon-copies however normally it is noisy and can only print low resolution graphics, with limited color performance, limited quality and low speed.

POS Hardware for Smart POS system

A full set of  POS system is integrated with POS software and hardware. POS hardware  is included barcode scanner, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode printer, customer display and others.

Barcode Scanner

Barcode Scanner is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Currently, the four different types of bar code readers available are the pen type readers (bar code wands), laser bar code scanners, CCD (Charge Couple Devices) barcode readers and camera based barcode readers. Here we will compare the laser and CCD barcode scanners.

  • Laser Barcode Scanners

Laser barcode scanners use a laser beam as their light source, and typically employ either a reciprocating mirror or a rotating prism to scan the laser beam back and forth across the bar code. As with the pen type bar code reader, a photo diode is used to measure the intensity of the light reflected back from the bar code.

  • CCD Barcode Scanners

CCD barcode scanners use an array of tiny light sensors lined up in a row in the head of the barcode reader. Voltage waveform corresponding to the bars and spaces of the bar code is generated and sent to the decoder, which decodes the data and sends it to the computer. The main difference between a CCD barcode scanner, a pen type barcode scanner, and laser barcode scanner is that the CCD barcode scanner measures emitted ambient light from the bar code whereas pen or laser barcode scanners measure reflected light of a specific frequency originating from the scanner itself.
For CCD barcode scanners their are two primary limitation; first it has a short "read" range, and must be held no more than 1 to 3 inches from the bar code. Further, the CCD has a limited width, and will not read bar codes that are wider than the face of the scanner.
